Looking down on the glass case in the stillness and quiet of the guarded safe room that contained the Book of Kells has to be one of the most spiritual experiences of my life.  As I stared down on the pages that had been selected for viewing that day and saw the incredibly vidid colors and beautiful artistry, I couldn't help but think of the men that had labored for years working to bring God's word to life on the pages of the book.  You could almost step back in time and see them with the candles burning beside them patiently recording the verses and etching the illustrations.  I consider myself very blessed to have been able to see it just once in my life thus far and hope that one day I will travel again to that Blessed Room and see it again with my childen so they may experience the same feelings that I had as well.  Travel has brought me great blessings!

The most emerald green my eyes have ever been blessed to see grew on the moors of Ireland on the Ring of Kerry.  It has to the the most beautiful drive I have ever been on in my life.  Miles of rock strewn fields dotted with fluffy sheep that have long tails just like puppy dogs and stoic boarder collies chasing behind them.  Some of the finest hotels I have ever stayed in with views of lakes with mountain views in the background. One day I will go back and visit the Emerald Isle.  A place of mystery, enchanment and some of the most endearing people you will ever meet.

As parents, we all want what is best for our children.  We dream they will have better educations than we were afforded and there in have more comfortable lives as well.  Unfortunately, leaving this completely up to "book learning" alone, the task will not be reached by many of our children today.  Books and classrooms only go so far.  Textbooks awaken a desire to want to know more and videos and internet searches just arouse curiosity.  As a parent, but also a classroom teacher of 18 years, I know there is one way to truly increase the understanding in my children's minds and that is hands-on experiences.  Travel is the way to understanding.
How can you expect your children to understand the beginnings of the Revolutionary War in the United States if they have never seen Boston? How can they understand the importance of the Great Wall of China to the people of China, if they have never spoken to the people themselves.  These experiences build true understanding.
Children that have been exposed to travel and different cultures are more Globally competitive in the demanding workplace environment that we see today.  As parents, we are their greatest teachers. Travel is the doorway we can provide them to the world and we can be their guides.
